Virat Kohli or Yashasvi Jaiswal – Who Should Open With Rohit Sharma During Ind-Ire T20 WC 2024 Match?

New York: With a day still left for India’s opening game at the T20 World Cup 2024 against Ireland, there is still no clarity over who opens with captain Rohit Sharma. While the two realistic candidates for that spot are Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal, it remains to be seen who walks out with Rohit on Wednesday at the Nassau County ground in New York. With experts and fans divided over this opening dilemma – former India opener Sunil Gavaskar has weighed in on this.
Gavaskar backs Kohli over Jaiswal for the opening slot. If that happens, it would be interesting to see Jaiswal finds a spot in the XI or not.
In an interaction with Star Sports following the end of T20 World Cup opener between USA and Canada, Gavaskar said, “Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli as openers. The way Kohli has batted, particularly the second half of the IPL, he deserves to open the batting with Rohit Sharma, the captain. Seriously, good players are good players. They can bat anywhere, you know whether they’re right and left hand.”
“So no, I don’t think. It’s very good to talk on television about left hand-right hand combination, good players are good players. In Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, you have got 2 terrific and 2 fantastic batters. The kind of form Kohli has shown in the IPL, he has to open the batting.” Gavaskar added.
The Indian team won their warm-up game against Bangladesh by 60 runs. The win would give them a lot of confidence ahead of their T20 WC 2024 opener.
