What Is Devin, World’s First AI Engineer And How It Works
The US-based startup Cognition Labs recently announced the launch of Devin AI, claiming it to be the world’s first fully autonomous AI software engineer.
The new advanced AI software can plan and execute complex engineering tasks requiring thousands of decisions. As per the company, Devin is equipped with common developer tools including the shell, code editor, and browser within a protected computing space, similar to what a human developer uses.
Devin AI can remember what’s important, get smarter over time and fix its own mistakes. This AI software engineer can work with you in real-time. According to the company, Devin shares its progress, listens to feedback and collaborates with you on design choices when necessary.
“With Devin, engineers can focus on more interesting problems and engineering teams can strive for more ambitious goals,” Cognition Labs said.
Devin is an advanced AI capable of various tasks. It can generate images with hidden messages using ControlNet and Modal. Also, Devin can develop and deploy complete apps independently. It autonomously identifies and fixes bugs in codebases and trains its own AI models.
This AI software engineer addresses bugs and feature requests in open source repositories and contributes to mature production repositories. For example, it recently solved a bug in the sympy Python algebra system by setting up the code environment, reproducing the bug and fixing it. Additionally, Devin handles real-world tasks like writing and debugging code for computer vision models. It collects and analyses resulting data, presenting a comprehensive report at the end.
“Devin correctly resolves 13.86 per cent of the issues end-to-end, far exceeding the previous state-of-the-art of 1.96 per cent. Even when given the exact files to edit, the best previous models can only resolve 4.80 per cent of issues,” the company said.
