Who is Satish Kumar? IRMS Officer To Become 1st Dalit Chairman Of Railway Board
Indian Railway Management Service (IRMS) officer Satish Kumar has created history by becoming the first chairman and chief executive officer from the Scheduled Castes in the Railway Board’s existence, as announced by officials on Tuesday. Jaya Varma Sinha, the current chairperson and CEO, is set to retire on August 31, paving the way for Kumar to assume office on September 1. “The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointment of Shri Satish Kumar, Indian Railway Management Service (IRMS), Member (Traction & Rolling Stock), Railway Board to the post of Chairman & Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Railway Board,” a govt order said.
Who is Satish Kumar?
A 1986-batch Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineers (IRSME) officer, Kumar has made significant contributions to railways throughout his career, spanning over 34 years.
He served as the divisional railway manager (DRM) of the Lucknow division on Northern Railway from April 2017-2019.
Before his appointment as the general manager of North Central Railway, Kumar also served as the senior deputy general manager and chief vigilance officer on North Western Railway in Jaipur.
Kumar was recently appointed as the MTRS, a key position that oversees the critical aspects of traction and rolling stock across railways.
Kumar started his career with Indian Railways in March 1988. Over the years, he has held numerous key positions across various zones and divisions, contributing to innovations, enhanced efficiency, and improved safety within the railway system.
His initial postings included the Jhansi Division of the erstwhile Central Railway and the Diesel Locomotive Works (BLW) in Varanasi, where he honed his skills in locomotive engineering and maintenance.
He later served in the North Eastern Railway, Gorakhpur, and Patiala Locomotive Works, contributing to critical projects that enhanced the operational efficiency of these divisions.
