World Obesity Day 2024: Expert warns sleep apnea can lead to increased obesity risk

Obesity and sleep apnea are intricately linked, forming a detrimental cycle that exacerbates both conditions. Obesity, particularly excess weight around the neck and throat area, can lead to the narrowing of airways during sleep, increasing the likelihood of sleep apnea episodes.

Conversely, on World Obesity Day 2024, the expert warned that sleep apnea disrupts sleep patterns and decreases the quality of sleep, contributing to weight gain and exacerbating obesity.

Dr HB Chandrashekar, Senior Consultant, Pulmonology, Intervention Pulmonology, SPARSH Hospital, Bangalore, said, “Dysregulation in leptin due to sleep apnea can lead to leptin resistance, causing increased accumulation of fat tissue and contributing to obesity. This imbalance disrupts the natural interplay between ghrelin and leptin, exacerbating weight gain.”

Managing obesity and sleep apnea

Several strategies can be employed to tackle obesity and sleep apnea, promoting a better quality of life. Lifestyle modifications play a crucial role, including adopting a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins, while minimising intake of processed foods and sugary beverages.

Regular physical activity is also essential, aiding in weight loss and improving overall health. Weight management programs, supervised by healthcare professionals, offer personalized approaches to address obesity and its associated risks, including sleep apnea.
