WPL 2024 Points Table: UP Warriorz hand Gujarat Giants six-wicket thrashing to go one spot

Alyssa Healy led UP Warriorz to register their second successive victory in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024, beating Gujarat Giants by six wickets at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Friday.

Gujarat Giants posted a low target of 143 runs for UP, whose bowlers didn’t give away too many runs as Sophie Ecclestone shined with a three-wicket haul.

UP Warriorz who lost their first two games of the tournament bounced back as they beat Mumbai Indians to secure their first win and on Friday thrashed Gujarat, denying them their inaugural win. UP, who were on the fourth spot have now climbed to the third while Gujarat remains last on the table rankings. With this win, the Warriorz have raised their Net Run Rate (NRR) to the positive end.

Grace Harris stars with 60*

Healy had won the toss and decided to bowl first as Gujarat skipper Beth Mooney (16 off 16; 2 fours) came to open with Laura Wolvaardt (28 off 26; 4 fours). The likes of Harleen Deol, Phoebe Litchfield, and Ashleigh Gardener contributed decently with their respective 18 off 24, 35 off 26, and 30 off 17 after the openers departed. Giants posted 142/5 on the scoreboard after completing 20 overs with Dayalan Hemalatha and Kathryn Bryce unbeaten on 2 and 5 respectively.

Giants’ bowlers leaked too many runs as Healy (33 off 21; 7 fours) opened with Kiran Navgire (12 off 8; 2 fours) and the duo stitched a 42-run stand for the opening wicket. Chamari Athapaththu scored 17 off 11 laced with four fours and Shweta Sehrawat could manage 2 off 7 deliveries. Warriorz’ saviour was Grace Harris who stacked up an unbeaten 60 facing 33 deliveries that included nine fours and two sixes, with Deepti Sharma (17 off 14; 3 fours) supporting her till the end as they chased the target down in just 15.4 overs.
