‘You Can Leave’: BJP’s Meenakshi Lekhi Lashes Out At Audience For Not Chanting ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’

Union Minister Meenakshi Lekhi on Saturday lashed out at a section of the audience at a youth conclave in Kerala’s Kozhikode district for not raising the chants of ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ despite repeatedly being asked by her to do so, news agency PTI reported.

Concluding her speech at the conclave, the BJP MP asked the audience to follow her in chanting “Bharat Mata Ki Jai”.

However, the audience apparently did not yell “Jai” with the loudness anticipated by the minister. Subsequently, she pointed at a section of the audience and said, “Few guys are still sitting with their hands folded.” She then proceeded to ask the members of the audience sitting in the direction pointed at by her: “Is Bharat only my ‘mata’ or your ‘mata’ as well?”

“Tell me…Tell me…Is there any doubt? No doubt?… Enthusiasm needs to be expressed,” the Union Minister of State for External Affairs & Culture was quoted as saying by PTI. Lekhi once again raised the slogan and went on to say that the response from the previously mentioned people was still poor.

She subsequently pointed at a woman in the audience and called her out for what appeared to be the audience member’s reluctance to raise the slogan. Lekhi said to the woman, “The lady in yellow (dress) can stand up. Don’t look on to the sides. This is how I am going to speak to you. I am going to ask you a straight question. Bharat is not your mother?… Why this attitude?”

Lekhi again chanted ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’. The woman, according to Lekhi, again refrained from raising the chant and stood idle. The Union Minister then suggested that the woman leave the venue. “I think you should leave the house,” Lekhi said to the woman. The youth conclave was reportedly organised by certain right-wing outfits.
