YouTube is testing a new filter option which allow users to create video feed based off colour
YouTube has introduced a new feature on its homepage that lets users sort videos by colour. The streaming platform has added filter options like Red, Blue, and Green to filter content based on the colour of their thumbnails, making browsing more enjoyable and visually appealing.
The feature is reportedly still in the experimental stage and only a few users have access to it. However, we spotted the new feature on some of the iPhone and Android phones. The colour filter option is available along with the other filter options on the homepage, such as ‘New To You’, ‘Mixes’, ‘Music’, and other user-related YouTube streaming options. Notably, this feature does not affect the normal homepage feed, but it adds a new option at the top. If the YouTube app is updated, you will see a new pop-up window on the mobile app, asking you if you want to try something new, with choices to create a video page in red, blue, or green colours.
Interestingly, seeing the filter option available in some phones, it seems like YouTube’s mysterious algorithm picks videos that have a dominant colour in their thumbnails. It looks like YouTube simply arranges the videos by colour, adding some visual appeal to the platform. But the feature does not sort videos by any other factor.
Confirming the feature to The Verge, a YouTube spokesperson, Allison Toh, revealed that the new create a video feed based on colour option is currently only available to “some users on Android and iOS mobile devices.” However, he did not reveal the purpose of developing this feature, nor did he provide any official statement by YouTube on its plans for when (or if) it will be launched for everyone.
YouTube’s latest experiment with colour-coded video feeds is not a new idea. Many platforms use similar methods to let users filter content in a more visually appealing way.
